  Prologue

Nothing hurts worse than being disappointed by the single person you thought would never hurt you.

Little did I know that I was about to find out firsthand that people are not who they claim to be, even those you’ve be around your entire life.

  Hannah

All I could do was run. I was cold. I was exhausted, both mentally and physically. I was scared, but there was no way I was going to let myself stop running. Not until I was as far away as I could get. Not until I knew I was safe.

The problem was that I had no idea where I was going, because I didn’t have a clue where I was. When Reed bought me at the auction, he brought me to the house with a hood over my head. The ride was so long that I couldn’t have kept track of the twists and turns during the drive no matter how hard I would have tried.

Outside the house for the first time since I’d been sold to the highest bidder, I was surrounded by nothing but trees as far as I could see. Common sense should have told me to follow the long driveway that the car was parked in because that would have eventually led me to the main road and one step closer to being rescued.

The thing was, Reed wasn’t an idiot. He was going to hear the house alarm going off as soon as the window broke and the first thing he was going to do was take off down the driveway to find me because that made the most sense.

If I was going to have any chance to get away, I had to put as much distance as possible between he and I. My only opportunity to put space between us was to use misdirection to my advantage. If I would have run down the driveway, he may have been on my trail within a minute or two. By taking off into the woods, it may take him 10-minutes or more to realize that I went in a different direction. That would give me the head start I needed.

There was almost no visibility. Not only was it pitch-black outside because there were no lights to illuminate the woods, but there was a fog settling about three feet above the ground. Normally, a scene like that would have scared me to death, but it was scarier to be trapped inside that house with a man who was apparently capable of horrible, horrible things.

As I got deeper and deeper into the woods, I came to the realization that I had gotten away. He wasn’t behind me and I was pretty sure he wasn’t coming. Sure, I had no doubt that he was out there looking for me, but it would take him quite a while to figure out where I was. Desperately needing to catch my breath, I stopped running and leaned against a tree.

I guess I didn’t realize how much the running had taken out of me and soon my leaning on a tree turned to me sliding down the tree. Knowing that I didn’t have the luxury of unlimited time, I sucked for air as quickly as I could.

I squinted my eyes, sure that I was seeing things, but in the far distance, through the fog, I could see a single light. It was much too far away to be able to tell exactly what was being illuminated, but that didn’t matter to me. There was something there and that something may be just what I needed to get to safety.

Picking myself up off the ground, I made my way towards the light. It was taking forever, but it was beginning to get closer and closer. Eventually, I was able to see that there was a large fence separating the woods I was in and whatever the light was.

Learning about the fence was both good and bad news. On one hand, I would have to scale the fence with no knowledge of exactly what was waiting for me on the other side. On the other hand, the fence made it much more likely that whatever the light was belonged to someone other than Reed.

With no clue how long I’d been gone, I finally made it to the fence. There was a small opening that I was able to squeeze through, which was perfect because I was exhausted.

Unfortunately, the light was not attached to a house. In fact there wasn’t a house to be found. Instead, it was attached to a large pole right outside of some type of workshop, which looked like it hadn’t been used in quite some time.

I stumbled in, cautious of what I might find inside. Surprisingly, it was very clean. The outside looked old and tattered, but it had obviously been used for something in the not-so-distant past.

All I needed to do was hide until the sun began to come up. There wasn’t much I could do without being able to see, but I was far enough away that I felt safe for a few hours.

I sat down on a chair and rested my head on the work table. I didn’t plan to fall asleep, but I’m pretty sure I fell asleep almost instantly.

Before I knew it, I started dreaming, but it was more than a dream. The best way I can describe what I saw would be a flashback to something I never realized happened in the first place.

The images flashed through my head at a rapid pace. I could hear the screaming. I could see her body lying there. I watched as the police talked about what kind of monster could do such a thing. Who knew the monster had been right next to me the entire time?

The loud, blaring sound of the house alarm had me waking up in a cold sweat and interrupted my dream of Nikki. It took me a couple of moments to figure out what I was hearing, but once I realized what was happening, I jumped out of bed as quickly as I could. I was worried that the people who had held the auction caught wind of what I did and had decided to do something about it.

I ran to the front door and then to the back. There were no signs of forced entry as far as I could see. Not wanting the alarm company to send the authorities, I punched my code into the alarm system to silence the deafening noise.

Once the house was quiet, t
he realization hit me. Not once had there been a false alarm before and nobody had tried to break in.

  Oh fuck!

I ran to her room and tried to open the door but it was locked.

“Hannah?” I yelled while frantically knocking on the door. “Hannah, is everything okay in there?”

As expected, I did not receive an answer. I took a step back and kicked the door open. The curtains were blowing in the wind and there was glass all over the floor.

  Hannah was gone.

As I was frantically pulling my clothes on, I noticed a light was on in my office. I walked in and noticed that the folder I’d brought home earlier that night was sitting open, the photographs inside scattered across my desk. She had discovered what I did.

She hadn’t been gone long and I was certain I’d be able to catch up with her quickly. It was dark and she didn’t know the layout of the land that surrounded the house. There was no way she’d venture out into the woods. I’d catch up with her along the access road long before she made it to the highway.

I grabbed my keys and ran out the door, leaving the door unlocked behind me in case she decided to come back. I had no idea what her plan was, if she even had one, but I hoped she’d come to her senses and come back. The last thing I wanted to have to do was drag her back to the house kicking and screaming, but that’s what I would do if I had to.

Jumping into the SUV, I sped out of the driveway and pulled onto the service road. I wanted to drive without the headlights on so she wouldn’t see me coming, but it was much too dark and with the dense fog, I was having trouble seeing more than a few feet in front of me.

Turning the headlights on didn’t help much, but it did break through the fog a bit. Driving slow, I turned my head back and forth so I could scan the sides of the road. I expected to see her running near the ditch, since that was about the only place to go, but it was possible she was ducking down behind the trees in an attempt to stay hidden.

I drove all the way to the highway and didn’t spot her. She had done a very good job staying out of sight, but I knew she had to be somewhere in between the house and where I was sitting so I turned around and made my way back towards the house. This time, instead of relying on my headlights, I turned on my spotlight so I’d be able able to see the sides of the road easier.

The car was moving at a crawl and there was no way I could have gone any slower if I wanted to. The spotlight was cutting right through the fog and shining brightly into the woods, illuminating any places she could be hiding. I was looking in the ditches, into the trees, and anywhere else and she just wasn’t there.

I pulled back into the driveway and ran back into the house to see if she’d made her way back. It was wishful thinking and I knew I was just fooling myself into believing it was a possible, but I hoped for the best anyway. As expected, the house was quiet and empty.

Could she have really gotten away? There wasn’t enough time for her to have gotten away by foot, but could she have made a call from my office?

Even just thinking that was completely ridiculous. I knew it. Who could she have called? Even if she had, she didn’t know where she was so she couldn’t tell anyone where to go to pick her up. That is, of course, unless she called law enforcement, but that obviously wasn’t the case either because they wouldn’t pick her up and leave. They would be swarming the house.

No, she was around somewhere. No doubt she was hiding, but she had to be somewhere nearby. Maybe she didn’t actually take the service road. Maybe she really did take off into the woods. That was bad news for me because she could have gone in any direction and if I chose the wrong direction, she might actually get away.

For a few minutes, I thought that maybe I should let her get away. After all, she wasn’t with me because she wanted to be. She was at the house because I bought her and was forcing her to be there. Unfortunately, I knew that letting her go wasn’t an option. She would obviously go to the cops and what I did would be exposed. This would lead to me getting in trouble with the FBI and most likely losing my contract. It would also lead to the bad men behind the auction finding out what I did and if they saw me as a liability to their organization, I had no doubt they’d try to kill me.

I had a decision to make and I had to make it quickly. I had to find her and make her see I wasn’t the monster she thought I was. I had to find her and bring her back so I could keep her safe and allow her to see that I’m the man she needs in her life.

  Hannah

Every time I closed my eyes, I could see the images as if they were a DVD set to repeat. I barely slept because I was worried about who might come through the door at any moment, but every time I fell asleep, the same dreams were occurring over and over again.

My goal had been to get as rested as I could so that when the sun came up, I’d be able to see where I was going, making it easier to get as far away as I possibly could. Unfortunately, I wasn’t sure whether or not that was what I wanted to do anymore.

For the first time in this whole ordeal, I was genuinely scared. I had one thing going for me that none of the other girls from the auction would probably ever have. I was able to escape the home of my captor and I had the ability to run as fast and far away as I possibly could.

Sure, I could run, but where was I going to go? I freaked out when I saw the pictures on Reed’s desk and took off without a plan. All I cared about at the time was putting as much distance between he and I as I could. Now I was gone and realized I had no plan. I’d managed to find the shop building to hide out for the night, but then what?

Suddenly, I had a realization. I was much more afraid of all the things I didn’t know than I was of Reed. I thought about trying to find a telephone so I could call my dad, but it’s not like pay phones were easy to find. I had no idea if there were even any left.

I could have left the shop building and started running until I found a house. I could have knocked on their door and begged for them to help me, but who knew what kind of people I would come across. What if they knew Reed? What if it put me in an even worse situation than I already found myself in.

It was definitely in the back of my mind that bad things would happen to me if I were to come across the people responsible for the auction. For all I knew, Reed had already contacted them to let them know that I’d escaped. He could be having them keep an eye out for me. They could have been helping him search the property for me.

All I could do was cower into a corner. Why did I have to leave that house? He hadn’t done anything to me. He had only been treating me with respect. Yes, I found the pictures of what he did to my ex, but that didn’t necessarily mean he would do the same thing to me. What was I thinking?

I was so close to a breakdown when I heard movement outside, causing me to freeze in place. My heart was racing and I was holding my breath, afraid that something as simple as breathing would be heard and get me caught. I had no idea who was outside that door and I didn’t want to find out.

My hope was that it was either a large animal passing through or maybe even the owners of the property checking on things. As long as whatever or whoever it was didn’t try to come inside, I was going to be fine.

Intense shaking was taking over my body and a chill was taking over me. I had never been more afraid in my entire life. When I heard the door being opened, I thought I was going to be sick. Everything that had happened was all coming down to that one moment. I closed my eyes, not wanting to see what was about to happen to me.

“Hannah!” Reed yelled from inside the door. I braced myself to be snatched up from the corner or, at the very least, yelled and berated for leaving. “Hannah, thank God I was able to find you. I thought you were gone forever.”

The tone in his voice caught me off guard. I was expecting anger and fury. Instead, what I was hearing was relief. He sounded genuinely relieved that he had found me. To be honest, I was relieved that he had found me as well.

Before I even realized what I was doing
, I was on my feet and running out of the corner towards Reed. Without thinking, I leapt into his arms, almost knocking him backwards right out of the door he’d just come in.

“I was so worried that you were gone for good,” he continued. “I didn’t think I’d ever see you again.”

His words rang true and I could hear the sincerity in his voice. He wasn’t just saying it because he was trying to trick me. He meant every word that was coming out of his mouth.

All the emotions that I’d just gone through became too much for me and I broke down, wrapping my legs around his waist so he couldn’t put me down and clinging onto his shirt as I sobbed uncontrollably.

Reed shifted his body and moved to the chair that I’d been sitting in earlier. He wouldn’t have been able to shake me if he wanted to because I was grabbing onto him like a spider monkey. Instead, he carried me to the chair, sat down, and rubbed my back while I bawled, soaking the shirt he was wearing.
